Pokemon Of The Week (#1)

Pokemon Of The Week (#1)

Overview:

Hello and welcome to the world of pokémon! My name is Red! People call me the Pokémon Prof! This world is inhabited by creatures called Pokémon! For some people, Pokémon are pets. Others use them for fights. Myself…I study pokémon as a profession.

Well as the title explains it, I’m here to bring you an intricate competitive guide on a certain Pokémon… Every week! So without Further ado let the Pokémon Profiling begin!

Being in the Halloween spirit, today’s Pokémon of the week will revolve around the Gas Pokémon. This Pokémon lurks in the shadowy corners of rooms, it awaits to steal it’s prey’s life force… This could be none other than Gengar!

Gengar is a wonderful addition to any Overused team. With three immunities, three resistances, two weaknesses, a base speed over 100 and a base Sp. Attack at 130, Gengar has all it needs to excel. The generation shift has not been to kind to it; the only bad thing is that Gengar no longer has the elemental punches it once boasted with it’s behemoth Sp. Attack.

Ability, Item & Nature:

Gengar’s ability, levitate, is quite the golden egg, turning a major and common weakness into an immunity. A great item for Gengar would have to be Leftover’s or a Petaya Berry for that extra boost in Sp. Attack when you’re low on health. In order to accent it’s Sp. Attack or Speed go with either a Modest (+Sp. Attack, -Attack) or Timid (+Speed, -Attack) nature.

Moveset:

Option 1:

1. Shadow Ball/ Sludgebomb/ Psychic

2. Icywind/ Thunderbolt

3. Will-O-Wisp/ Hypnosis

4. Thunderbolt/ Dream Eater

Both Shadow Ball and Sludgebomb gain a good STAB boost, however I feel that Shadow Ball takes the cake. With the ability to take out the opposing forces of Psychic types or Ghost types, Shadow Ball seems like the better alternative, however if you know you’ll be up against hoards of Normal types, like the obvious Blissey, go with one of the other aforementioned moves. Sludgebomb has the chance of poisoning, yet with only pure bug or pure grass types being the only target I might stick with Psychic. Icywind is the better option when compared to Icepunch, with the 100% certainty of lowering your opponents Speed, you can easily put Dragon types —like Dragonite or Flygon who regularly make appearances in the OU pool— in their place. Thunderbolt is another good option, paralyzing foes on occasion, taking a load of damage against the Bulky Water types, and repels Gyrados. Will-O-Wisp is a grand option, causing burn damage every turn and cutting your opponents Attack in half, thus saving your meager Defenses. Hypnosis is also a good choice especially if you choose to pair it with Dream Eater to get yourself a nice HP boost, yet the lack in accuracy can be a major downside; even more so when Gengar might not be able to take a more than a couple of hits if you have to rely on the HP recovering moves.

Option 2:

1. Hypnosis/ Will-O-Wisp

2. Mean Look/ Dream Eater

3. Confuse Ray/ Perish Song

4. Perish Song/ Dream Eater/ Shadow Ball

Item: Wide Lens/ Leftovers

This moveset is basically an annoyer, a sort of mix between Crobat and Misdreavus. Most of you can already tell where this is going but I will elaborate. For this move set you must decide if you want to beat your opponent by either by a Perish Song, or by pummeling your opponent while he’s unconscious.

For Perish Song Moveset: Once again it’s a choice between Hypnosis or Will-O-Wisp, this time with your Wide Lens equipped I would go with Hypnosis. Starting off the bat, go with a Confuse Ray, then Hypnosis (and with a little praying) it should land. Afterwards use a Meanlook, and then you have the choice of either recovering with a Dream Eater or Shadow Ball. Remember to constantly use your annoyer moves (Hypnosis and Confuse Ray) to stall and then switch out.

For Non-Perish Song Moveset: This move-set is another good option. It’s also an annoyer to the max but without the cheapness of Perish Song. Start off with Confuse Ray, then a Hypnosis. Mean Look is a viable option with the whole switching out thus removing the confuse status etc… It also prevents the sleeping Pokémon from switching out, and with the “Sleep Clause” in effect you won’t be able to use Hypnotize again… Then go in for the bombardment of Shadow Balls and Dream Eaters.

Conclusion:

Wrapping this up, Gengar is just one of those superb 1st Generation Pokémon. A wonderful addition to a team and also a plus on Double Battles thanks to it’s ability.

This is Red, and I hope everyone had a happy Halloween!
